Remember the whole Dr. Suess debacle?
My sister wrote some sort of post, I don’t remember what exactly she wrote, but I remember writing that taking books off Ebay, taking printed books off of shelves is akin to book banning/censorship which you all know I AM AGAINST.
Someone my sister is friends with commented to me: It’s not for us to worry about. It’s not our decision to think what should and shouldn’t be sold. Other people can tell us what to do. This isn’t the exact quote, but you get the gist of what this person was thinking…
I later texted my sister and asked her what this particular commenter added to my sister’s life. My sister replied:
“People want/need to be led. They are looking for leaders to tell them what to do.”
I believe I responded back: ummmm No. Don’t include me in that group…perhaps I used somewhat stronger language…
So- first question:
Do people want to be led?
But let’s table that for a second…
Yesterday I went to see a documentary- ” Final Account” about some of the Germans who were children during the Nazi regime. Quite interesting.
At the beginning of the doc, a quote flashed up at the screen. It impacted me so much that I made sure I remembered who wrote it:
Monsters exist, but they are too few in number to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are the common men, the functionaries ready to believe and act without asking questions.
Primo Levi
So, let’s ask that question again:
Do people want to be led?
Do people want to question things?
Are we all too willing to believe what we are told?
If someone says jump, do we say “How High?” Or do we ask why? Or what happens if we don’t? Do we ask what the consequences are?
I ask again: do you want to be led?
