A few months back my friend wrote a post http://debsdespatches.com/2022/11/30/i-confess/. I thought this was a lot of fun and I decided to copy it!!

The things that Deb wrote about were sorry not sorry types of things- they sort of go against popular opinion or we don’t like admitting necessarily. So here are some of my true confessions:

  1. I watched the first ten minutes of Game of Thrones and never watched another moment of it. I watched one season of Breaking Bad and Succession and I liked neither. I do realize that these are considered some of the greatest TV shows ever. I just didn’t like them.
  2. I don’t like miso or matcha. These are the latest fad foods but they just don’t cut it for me.
  3. While talking about food- just say NO to sushi. To be fair, I don’t really like fish cooked or otherwise.
  4. coffee- what is the big deal about coffee or latte or espresso. Am I the only one who tastes the bitter?
  5. Cuddly sleepers- Cuddling is for before sleeping and waking up in the morning. Let me sleep.
  6. You will never here me utter the words- “Let’s go Dancing”- this is never an activity I will willingly go to if it’s not related to an event like a wedding or celebration.
  7. Tik tok or twitter- I don’t see how people can spend hours on them- and I get the algorithm thing, but I just think it’s boring
  8. I am a morning person. I can’t imagine sleeping much past 7 (though I have woken up at 7 and read in bed for awhile) and going to sleep routinely past 11pm doesn’t make sense to me
  9. I always wash my face before I go to bed at night, no matter how tired I am. I don’t think I could sleep if I didn’t wash up.
  10. I always clean out my fridge once a week and throw out anything that has done bad, or make sure I use items that are about to turn. I can’t imagine growing a science experiment in the cheese drawer.

This is a small sample of some of my opinions and habits that might not fit with the population at large.

What are some habits you have or opinions on popular things that might go against the flow?

  1. I don’t think any of the things you listed are out of the norm at all, except maybe the coffee… but still we all have our preferences. You seem pretty normal to me LA

  2. I check a lot of the same boxes, LA. No sushi or coffee for me either and I’m trying to think if I’ve tried matcha or miso. I haven’t watched Breaking Bad or Succession – because I like to get up early in the morning. And cleaning out my fridge every week is aspirational at this point but I love the idea!

    1. I knew I liked you! Seriously..on sundays I make dinner out of everything in the fridge- leftovers or produce or whatever. I always market on Mondays so I feel like it sets a good tone for the week.

  3. Wow, LA. I am in 100% agreement with you on every single item here.

I’m trying to think of my contrarian opinions and can only think of a few at the moment:
    1) My food aversions are based on texture, not taste (e.g., can’t do cottage cheese or bananas)
    2) Word problems and jigsaw puzzles are fun activities (people look at me like I’ve just admitted I’m a serial killer haha)

  4. I loved GoT, didn’t care for Breaking Bad, and what is Succession? and I have enough coffee makers to open a shop. I am glad we do not share the same likes and dislikes and followed the same exact routines. Just imagine if everyone followed the same routines, and had the same likes and dislikes. Would that be horrible or what?

  5. I do have a kind of a routine. I get up around 715, exercise for about 15 minutes. Then, weather permitting I go for a run, not far. Then breakfast. I think a good routine is a good thing as long as it contains healthy habits.
Totally agree about sushi. I am not eating raw fish no matter what you call it.
I will disagree about the coffee. Espresso in the afternoon is almost as good as wine and it saves on calories.

      1. Right. But “sushi” is the type of rice used. Not to mention some sushi is all vegetable and some are cooked. Sashimi is specifically raw fish.

  6. This is a fantastic blog post idea, especially when discussing fads or trends.

I agree with you on some points, but not on all. Particularly coffee. BUT, I didn’t start drinking it until I was in my forties. I was like you for most of my life. I had a latte one day, and it forever changed my mind. 🤣

I’ll say that I’m glad humans have opposing viewpoints on these likes and dislikes. It makes conversations much more interesting.

  7. No to matcha…I find it disgusting. And although I’ve not tried sushi, I don’t like the idea of raw fish. I don’t like smoked salmon either.
Disagree on the coffee, and early mornings … im so not a morning person. Hubby now knows to keep his distance for at least a couple of hours. I also agree with cuddle with sleep … leave me alone – it interrupts my sleep – even more so in the morning.

As for me … being Scottish .
. I hate bagpipes, whisky, porridge

  8. Love this ❤ and thanks for the shout-out LA 🙂

I like miso soup when I'm feeling ill, which probably says all you need to about it! I enjoy vegetarian sushi occasionally. Salmon is fine, but I'd rather have it smoked on gorgeous Irish bread, thickly spread with creamy butter 🙂 As for coffee, I have to admit that Himself has converted me, and I do enjoy the barista level equipment and skill with which he makes me the occasional cup.

      1. It is, even if it takes up LOADS of room in our small kitchen. But I would seriously love some of the original 50s equipment from Italy just for how gorgeously Art Deco it looks.

  9. I agree with most of your things. I have had sushi but not the really weird things. Those TV shows are what drove me away from watching TV. Reality TV is not reality and I don’t like watching stupid people do stupid things. Waste of my time.

  10. I am a night person. I could easily stay up doing stuff until 1 or 2, but I have to be up by 7:30, so I go to bed by around midnight. All those “how to wake up at 5AM to be productive” things annoy the heck out of me, because it’s like society thinks nightowls are inherently lazy because we aren’t up and buzzing around by 6AM. I get things done, just at night instead of first thing in the morning.

  11. Good post! 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9 and maybe 2 if i knew what matcha was although it sounds familiar. It’s why I seldom watch tv as the shows everyone raves about I find boring or stupid. I am a night owl however, but it’s not a good thing. I need to go to bed earlier, but read too late at night.

  12. This is a fun post, but makes me a little sad too. There are a lot of benefits to technology, but knowing everyone’s personal preferences and trying to make them feel bad or “less than” because of a difference of opinion is just silly. I like a certain “whatever” and you don’t. It may make a point of discussion, but why are people appalled that someone doesn’t binge watch a certain TV show? Priorities, folks!

  13. Interesting blog. Well, I will start by saying I had to read Game of Thrones for my book club when it first came out . I quickly learned that I needed to flip through all the lengthy battle scenes because I didn’t want to read through the countless ways horses and men might die and so I skimmed or skipped those scenes which were endless but unnecessary for me.

BUT, for anyone who wants to learn how to write outstanding characters, reading the three dimensional characterizations created by the author would be a worthy learning experience. I waded through countless other scenes because As nutty as George RR. Martin is, he is able to create some of the most brilliantly inventive characters ever put on the page. He is a brilliant writer. I found his characters incredibly diverse and interesting. So much so that I skipped through some parts of the book just to check on my favorite characters.
I used to tell my students to create believable characters they need to write people who make their readers feel emotion. It doesn’t matter if the readers love or hate them. Just make the readers feel something! Either love them or despise them, but feel something. Otherwise nobody cares if your characters live or die. Your story is uneventful if your characters are dull. There weren’t any dull characters in the novel GOT or tv show. I faithfully would watch GOT because my youngest son was a fan. But I would fast forward through any violence or blatant sex scenes because that’s not my thing. BUT, I stuck around for the ensemble of great characters. AND in the TV show I had a tad bit of a crush on actor Jason Momoa on the show. At that time, I thought he was the most gorgeous human being I had ever seen. Lol

In regards to some of your other comments, no to sushi, I love good coffee, no to Starbucks coffee it is too bitter, no to cuddly sleepers, I love dancing. Will dance anywhere, any time, even reeling from chemo I will dance my way to the bathroom.
I dance doing housework and singing show tunes…and don’t care who sees me.
No to TikTok, no to cartoons. I ve never liked them. The only cartoons I tolerate are Disney musicals and they are only fun when watching with your children or grandchildren. Yes I wash up before bed unless after chemo I sometimes fall asleep in my recliner.

I’m a late night person. Never ever been a morning person. I hate the morning. Because even when I got up early to teach I still stayed up late. In college I tried to get all afternoon classes and I would do my best studying at 3 am. I love the night. (I could do just fine as a vampire if they actually existed).
I have no patience for ignorance, bigotry, and people who refuse to do research. I’m impatient with people who look away and don’t help others. I don’t understand that.
I love all kinds of makeup. It’s like painting a picture for me, or putting on stage makeup and becoming someone else. I loved being an actress because I could jump into the character of another human being. Nothing is quite as much fun as reinventing yourself. An actor, like a writer, keeps a portion of each character he/she has played or created.
What a great blog LA! Bravo… sorry my answer is so long… o
I’m on nausea meds so I’m super hyper now

  14. Most of my thoughts and actions have gone against the flow. First and foremost I hate gossipy opinion mongers. I can’t mingle with them much.
I love colleagues who work quietly without making much noise or showing off. I don’t like partying and I don’t like parties where who are forced to dance. I get bored quickly with anything. I have got to do a variety of things a day. I love to sleep in the afternoons. That’s just a few giving me a solid idea about my next blog post.

  15. With the exception of number 8, I’m with you on all these preferences! I also hate “open concept” (who wants to live in one giant room? where’s the character of the house?), am rarely worried about the things the news media tell me are huge problems and usually worry very much about the stuff that is rarely mentioned on TV. On so many matters, I’m sort of out of step with the world, but I’m okay with that!

      1. I’m just educating you. Sushi is the type of rice used paired with something be it raw or cooked fish, sweet potato or vegetables. Sashimi on the other hand is strictly “raw fish”.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. I get it. Im still saying that while that might be legit correct, in common parlance, its assumed to be raw fish. If my daughter says she wants sushi and I hand her a bowl of rice she’s pretty pissed

      3. Ok. Saw my friend who grew up in Japan and whose parents live there. In Japan if you say sushi you will get vinegered rice with a piece of raw fish on top. Always. Rice with a veggie or tempura is not sushi but a roll. In Japan there is no such thing as sushi rice …it’s just rice. Sushi rice is a strictly American term.

  16. I’m with you on 2, 7, 8 but I can not live without coffee, nor do I want to even try. Don’t particularly like people, I like the idea of people, but I get overwhelmed with large groups of strangers and I NEED A LOT OF TIME ALONE! This could be TMI? Hugs, C

  17. I am in agreement on a number of these and we can’t both be weird, right?😁
One episode of GoT and I was done. We watched two of Breaking Bad and found it interesting (we know the Albuquerque area very well). Couldn’t even do one episode of Succession. Mostly we watch movies and documentaries, not TV series.

I can’t live without coffee! Tea is something I drink, but it’s no substitute.

I have no confessions. Oh, one. I hate ballpoint pens and only write with Pentel EnerGel.

  18. It’s interesting to think about opinions that go against the flow. One of mine is the love for beer. In Wisconsin it’s practically a staple and virtually everyone I know likes it. To me it’s a man’s drink (this might be an unpopular opinion) and it tastes disgusting. I’ve been told it depends on the beer…but they all taste like piss (excuse the language) to me.

As for coffee, it’s my fuel. But while most coffee lovers enjoy their Starbucks, I think it’s not only overpriced but not even good.

Another unpopular opinion I have is that summer is the best season. I think it’s abnormal for someone to enjoy sweltering heat and humidity. I could live with 60 degree weather all year round. But drop to 50 at night, so I can sleep with my windows open.

As for your list, I’m surprised you only watched one season of “Breaking Bad.” But you gave Game of Thrones more time than I have…just can’t get myself to even think of trying to watch it. And I’m definitely like you on being an early riser. If I wake up past 7 a.m. on the weekend, I feel like I’m running behind on the day.

    1. I admit I’m with you on the beer…I’ll opt for cider every time. It is funny how adamant people get when you say you don’t like something that is thought to be universal…

  19. I am about 50-50 on this list. LOL!
I think I will have to use this idea for a Friday post if I can borrow it from you. 😉
My husband doesn’t drink and so many are shocked by that. I barely drink. On special occasions I will have wine.

I don’t like shopping. Not my idea of a fun time, unless you mean shopping at a bookstore. 😉
