I’m a big fan of romantic comedies and cozy mysteries. By extension, I am a fan of the “meet cute”.
“Meet cute” is simply the term used to describe when two characters meet in a charming/cute way, and then those characters end up in a romantic relationship
I was originally going to defend the concept of “meet cute”, but I decided that this is a device that some people are just not going to like, or that some people are going to think is silly. SO I concede that some people like it, and others are just never going to justify this in books and movies. And I really don’t care what others thing, because….
I love romantic comedies.
I love cozy mysteries where characters fall in love.
I love the meet cute.
Sorry, not sorry.
What are my favorite “meet cute” films?
- Notting Hill (OK- meeting Hugh Grant by chance is sort of a dream)
- Before Sunrise
- When Harry Met Sally
- Bridget Jones’ Baby (though is it a meet cute if you don’t end up with the guy?)
- Pretty Woman (sorry- I’m counting it)
- It Happened One Night
- Bringing Up Baby
- You’ve Got Mail
- The Big Sick
- Four Weddings and a Funeral (ok- not really the best..but Hugh Grant)
Do you have any favorite meet cutes? Or do you have any meet cutes that you just can’t stand?
Meet Cute:
Discuss.
The best meet-cute of all times is Pride and Prejudice. (especially the one with Colin Firth!) I loved Three Weddings and a Funeral!

Ohhhh…that’s about my favorite movie (we only speak of the Colin Firth version in my house)💗

I love a Meet Cute! How about Holiday with Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz. That movie specifically talks about the Meet Cute concept in movies. 🥰

I almost added that to the list. Tough choices!!

I like “Meet Cute” movies, too. I’m not sure if it qualifies exactly, but I like “As Good as It Gets.”

I can’t think of any Meet Cute films or books that I like, but then I don’t read/watch romantic comedies…

I totally get and respect that. Though evvie drake would be a good meet cute

That was pretty cute, though I don’t think it adheres to that stereotypical ‘aww, that’s adorable’ sort of meeting.

Really not a romantic comedy person, although I have decided that the seasonal drama/romance movie, aka the “washed up movie star Christmas romance” can be entertaining in an odd way.

50 First Dates and Meet the Parents and The Heartbreak Kid came to mind as being movies I laughed at that involved romance, but it’s been a while since I’ve watched any rom coms. I had to Google it . Here’s a good list . https://www.marieclaire.com/culture/g4017/best-rom-coms/ my husband doesn’t like them so we end up watching anything but that if we watch together . If I’m alone I watch sci-if and action movies. 😁 Many movies I used to think were funny are too immoral for my taste these days.

All good choices,! I used to see with my daughter, a fan of the genre, but I’m dragging my husband to see Marry Me next week…

I love them and find them soothing in a crazy world! I love While You Were Sleeping, Holiday, Love Actually, and while it probably doesn’t qualify, I have a weird fixation with The Accountant.

“Meet cute” was not part of my generation’s lingo, but I do get it. I don’t view movies from that perspective. Although one of my husband’s favorite movies is Pretty Woman, “our” usual movie fare is action, and there are not a lot of meet cute moments in battle scenes. Not talking equality here, but I refer anyone who thinks men and women are “the same” to their movie choices. (And what straight guy would say “…but Hugh Grant?”) BTW, we are in total agreement on Hugh Grant. Great smile-provoking post today.

I’m not a huge meet- cute person, but I do love them when they lead to great conversations, like in You’ve Got Mail and Elizabethtown. I’m a sucker for movies that feature two characters just talking and being open about their hopes and dreams, and even the things that seem inane or silly.

“Meet cute” hmmm, must be trendy as I’ve not heard this phrase before. But to play along, I cast votes for Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, and The Holiday

Guernsey!! How did I forget about that one?! Excellent choice! And yes to holiday as well

There are a few of these I like, but I dose myself carefully with them and realize it’s not that way in real life 🙂

Oh completely. But sometimes I need escapism…it allows my mind to rest. I think everyone has their thing that allows their minds to shut off. Which is why I changed the way I handled this post. I figured I’d just share something I love, knowing that some people just won’t get it like I do, and I’m ok with that
LikeLiked by 1 person
Agreed. I do enjoy escapism. I’m more inclined to watch action, adventure, fantasy type stuff, but those films usually have a little bit of romance in them

The only thing I hate is forced romance. Like in A Few Good Men, I’m glad they didn’t make Cruise and Moore get involved. It was perfect as it was

Yeah forcing it, or too many plot jumps can ruin it

Not only do I like meet cute shows but books as well. When I’m in a rut I love reading what I call “no think books”. Basically I know girl will
meet guy by accident, there will be a controversy, they will fall in love and be happy forever…so I don’t have to think much about the plot or ending, I just enjoy reading and relaxing.

“Before Sunrise” is one of the best, without a doubt. I would also add “(500) Days of Summer,” but not the obvious choice: I like when Tom meets Autumn at the end of the movie.

I first heard the term “meet cute” in “The Holiday”, when the ageing Hollywood writer explained it. I think my favourite example in a movie has to be between Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks in “Larry Crowne”.

Oh, I love “meet-cute” and romantic comedies – books and movies . This term “meet-cute”, I first heard it in this movie “The Holiday” starring Kate Winslet, Jack Black, Camerson Diaz . In one of the many beautiful scenes involving Kate Winslet, the retired screenwriter would say to Kate , “Well, this was some meet cute”. When Kate wonders, he would give beautiful example of meet cute of two characters ! Your post reminds me of this movie 🙂
