This week I am going to try something different- but I’m guessing you got that by the title. In order to understand what I am trying to do, you will need to read every day this week. Sorry- I realize that I am assigning homework, but I have an idea and I want to see it through. The following is fiction. My goal is to tell a small piece of a story, but to do it four different ways, and then see what you all think about the different ways of telling a story. remember to be kind in criticism because you all know I only do one draft and what you see will not be edited. It’s just an idea.
He sat down in the chair with a sigh. This ugly brown chair. This ugly, uncomfortable, mud brown chair. Out of all the chairs in the room, did he purposely choose to sit in the least comfortable one? He could have sat in the soft, welcoming arm chair with the ottoman perfectly placed in front. There’s always the sofa with it’s sleek leather cushions and welcoming back support. But no, he chose this wooden relic of a chair, with it’s slightly too small seat and the back piece referred to as a splat.
Splat. Yes, he realized as he tried impossibly to adjust his taller than average but shorter than tall body on this poor excuse for a chair, a chair with a piece called a splat was sort of a perfect penance for the chair he would use to fix the stupid mistake he had made three weeks before.
Splat went his happiness that day.
Splat went any chance of happiness in the future.
If he could only manage to mutter the words he needed to say.
Splat went his heart.
I’m already liking the descriptive words that’s being used. And how the word “splat” referred to both the chair and his life.

Thank you! And yes…this is the “description” piece

First, had to see if splat was real! Learned that yes, a definite chair part and just as uncomfortable as you describe as my dining chairs are designed with a splat 😦
Easy to visualize his choices in seating with your descriptions and his emotional state. My criticism: I caught a slight resemblance to Dr Seuss in the repeated use of “splat” near the end of the story.

Totally not anything with Seuss….just first draft woes. I was going for pieces of his life/heart falling to the floor, almost out of his control

I got that for sure, just a bit to much splat for me 🙂

Yes, I am looking forward to it! My initial thoughts were five differing viewpoints of the same event (like The Collector) and then a, “so, what does your point of view tell us about yourself” type reveal. 😉

That’s sorta kinds what I’m going for. What does the way the excerpt is written tell you about the character, the situation. What type of piece would it be a part of…

Interesting and imaginative, but not the right note to start off my Monday morning. Just Kidding. I know you said differing viewpoints. Will you let us know what his mistake was? I’m hoping the answer is “yes.”

Alas no. But I would love people to guess based on how each snippet is written

I liked this piece. And I very much liked the repetition of words. It brought a rhythm and flow to it. And splat is wonderful in oh so many ways.

So he’s guilty, but he’s feeling sorry for himself for his uncomfortable chair? Sounds like a narcissist. 😀 Can’t wait to read the next one.

I enjoyed your writing so much! However the word splat brought back a memory. When my son was a toddler I had this little Samurai Suzuki that did not have child locks. My son opened the door while I was driving. Thank God he was in a car seat! I told him “You’re going to go Splat!” He’d open the door laughing, “Splat Mommy, Splat!” UGH. I switched cars with my husband.

Omg!! Yeah…I wouldn’t want to hear the word either!!

It’s going to be fun to read your different versions of the story. I was amazed that splat could be a noun. It was always a very active verb at our house.

Sounds like a neat project — I’m looking forward to the other versions to come. And I really enjoyed the description “his taller than average but shorter than tall body.” That description would’ve fit in “Alice in Wonderland” 🙂

😉I thought it was more fun than giving his height

“Shorter than tall.” LOL! I get that!

Hmmm. I like the feelings you evoke between the uncomfortableness of the chair and the uncomfortableness of the main character – eager to know more. And, of course, I have to ask – is there really a chair with a thing in it called a splat? Haha. 😅😂

Yes there is! Isn’t it a great word to use?!

Hahaha! Wow. And, yes, a great word to use! For a moment as I was reading it, I was thinking you might write in the characters name as Splat. Hahaha. 😉

I would guess that he picked that particular chair as it mirrored his mood for the day. Now I want to know why !!😊
