I recently read a book, Send for Me, by Lauren Fox. This is about Jews during WWII both in Germany and America. I thought is was well written and interesting.
There was one quote early on in the book that sort of stopped my in my tracks:
Germans! Defend Yourselves! Do not buy from Jews
Lauren Fox, Send for Me
Ready for the game?
_____________! Defend yourselves! Do not buy from _____________.
I have installed a wheel here, with some other words. I’m going to spin the wheel and get some words to fill in these blanks…
clickclclclick clickclick click cl ick c l i c k c c c
First word:
Americans
Americans! defend yourselves. Do not buy from _____________
I’ll dispense the with the sound effects….
Second word:
Republicans
Americans! defend yourselves. Do not buy from Republicans
One more spin:
Americans! Defend yourselves! Do not buy from Democrats
See what a fun game!
Here are the rules if you want to play at home:
- You are not allowed to use the word racist, homophobe, pedophile or anything that the REASONABLE person would agree is a bad thing
- You are not allowed to use special interests. I understand that someone with a special interest might say it’s important, for this version of the game we will say that there are too many sides to each of these issues and is we started to go down this road, we would never buy anything from anyone- (true story- there is an indie bookstore in NYC that was in danger of closing so a cry began to save it. Then people started complaining that the owner of the bookstore owns stock in Amazon so she is apparently anti small local business, so a counter argument rang out that no one should shop at the store and it should close- seriously- this is really happening, so you understand my rule)
So….
Did you find any good words to substitute on your home wheel?
How many wins do we have if we play the substitution game?
X or O…
You start…
Americans ! Defend yourselves! Do not buy from Muslims! Unfortunately, I know many people who would gladly follow this. I know people who are very open about their belief that Islam should be illegal.

Right? And isn’t it ridiculous? Like people not going to Chinese restaurants! And that’s in liberal progressive NYC! I don’t understand this thinking, and I’m tired of it!

Americans! Defend yourselves! Do not buy from extraterrestrial aliens!
Unless the Earth is flat, there aren’t any extraterrestrial aliens even if CNN should interview one or two, so I don’t have to worry about this one. However, I do avoid many products for various reasons.

Everyone has there thing. I recognize that. But to rule out half the country as has? To rule that any one group is bad? This isn’t a game. Something is wrong with everyone

Blacks! Defend yourselves! Don’t buy from whites!
I don’t understand this game 😅 but the above is equivalent to what Malcolm X urged his followers to do : “When you spend your dollar out of the community in which you live the community in which you spend your dollar becomes richer and richer; the community out of which you take your money becomes poorer and poorer.”

I don’t think people actually see what they are doing sometimes. And we all get hurt in the fallout.

Oh definitely. And all it takes for things to become really bad is for someone who knows exactly what they’re doing to take advantage of the masses who don’t.

This game is dumb. Smart people know that . But dumb people are ruling the world governments.

I will admit that watching the events of the last year unfold from the other side of the world, I have wondered if we just see the most polarised 10% when news stories run – we never get to see the other 90% that don’t really mind what others do as long as they can get on with their life without too much trouble.
I do find myself wondering how people can sensibly hold the views they hold though – which leads me to wonder about education, sources of information, how easily led people are, and all manner of other things.

You see what the media decides should be seen. But that’s a whole other story

Britains! Defend Yourselves! Do not buy from Europe…………. (we’ve been playing this Brexit game for the past 5 years!😶)

And my usual…how’s that working for everyone?

Well the World didn’t stop on Brexit day, and the Pandemic played into Britain’s favour meaning a reasonable trade deal, I think with all the covid chaos going on European Governments didn’t want all out war with the UK, so yes in many ways we’re worse off but things could have been worse……much much worse.

Powerful post and a game that shouldn’t be played but you showed how easily it is played without people even thinking! There are no good substitutes!

Exactly. I think we sometimes make statements without really thinking them through. Words which lead to thoughts matter

Children, Defend yourselves! Do not buy from clowns. 🤡 That’s just a general life lesson…. I thought a little levity for the profound topic. Seriously, this is just an offshoot of the propaganda machine.

Completely. We need to make sure we aren’t taking part

An excellent post, as always, LA. You are pointing to the sheer volume of ignorance that lives and breathes within this country and across the world. It seems, as you write, to shift with the tides and the wind. People should spend more time thinking about, and reflecting upon themselves and their contributions instead of false binaries.

Just because the majority says something, it doesn’t mean it’s right…

You read my mind..I’m not buying from Amazon. AT least I’m trying not to buy from Amazon for a month. Started today..bought a pair of bike shorts at the local bike shop- spent more but felt better about myself.

Defending ourselves against “them” whoever they happen to be, is a concept that has been around forever. And has never once led to good things. Thanks for this powerful post!

Thank you. It’s never been good to think a group is an enemy…we need to think deeper. I know we are better than this

We’ve become so tribal in our politics. Thank you for a strong post to point that out.

Thank you. I think it’s become too easy to say things, to copy and paste, without giving thought to what things actually mean
