Today is Mother’s day and my mom’s birthday. As I told this to my friends yesterday, they said it meant she was destined to be a mother. As her daughter, I have to agree. While my mom has always been great, after spending one and a half semesters away from her during college, I realized just how great she truly was.
Last year I wrote about how my mom assists with my morning routine. This year, I decided to write about my college morning routine and how it just is not the same when my mom is not in the bedroom next door. Here it is:
- Since I now have no reassurance that my mom will gently wake me up to get ready for school, I use three alarms to ensure I wake up.
- The coffee, which my mom used to greet me with, I ended up preparing the day before since it takes too much time in the morning.
- After I get dressed, I have no one to ask if my clothes look good or if I did my eyeliner right except my roommate, who is still asleep by the time I leave for my first class. Before college, my mom would always be there to suggest I add a necklace or a little more eyeshadow. Perhaps I could wake up my roommate to see if I did my bronzer correctly, but I think we both know how that would go…
- I eat whatever looks edible for breakfast at the dining hall, which obviously does not compare to the omelets and french toasts my mom used to make for me.
- Before college, I loved coming home after school to talk to my mom about my day. Whether something funny happened in class or there was a pop culture scandal, my mom and I would chat. It was a great stress reliever after a long day of school and a great way to bond with my mom. Now, I can talk to my roommate or friends or send my mom a text, but it is not the same. Sometimes I liked to hear about my mom’s book club or the new tv show she was watching. Sometimes I just needed to vent, and there’s only so many times my roommate can hear how much I dislike my science class. With my mom, however, it always felt as if there were no limits to what I could talk about.
- Like my other meals, dinner is not a home-cooked meal unless the dining hall counts. Don’t get me wrong, when my mom would announce we were having bean stew for dinner or squash soup, I’d probably run to the dining hall. Yet, on most occasions, I would much prefer a mom-made dinner and the conversation which follows.
- As I study, whether in my dorm or the library, no one checks in on me asking if I want a snack or tea. Although I used to be annoyed when my mom would tell me when it was getting late (I have a clock!), now I really can study until 1 am without anyone realizing it.
- I go to sleep with a good night from my roommate, which, understandably, is not as loving as the good nights from my mom’s.
Now, there is a lot I love about college, including the new-found independence. But, sometimes, I miss having a mom I can depend on. Yes, she always picks up my phone calls and responds to my texts, but, unfortunately, no one has found a way for her to make me tea through the phone. Maybe I should work on that…
Either way, I am grateful that my mom endowed me with everything I needed to know before entering college (including how to do laundry). I am also thankful I graduated high school, still holding these endearing feelings.
Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Birthday, Mom.
My college routine differs from my morning routine only because I love you.
Not only were you meant to be a mother, but you are also the best mother anyone could ask for.
Thanks for the best mornings, afternoons, and evenings.
What a beautiful tribute! Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Birthday!

A beautiful loving tribute from an equally beautiful and loving daughter.
Y’all are truly so fortunate to have each other. As much as children are created by their mothers, mothers are created by their children. You have the mother, and daughter you have because you are each other’s mother and daughter.
Much love to you both!
Happy mother’s day, LA, and happy birthday too!
xoxo ❤
