I don’t make resolutions: I set goals.  Just using the term goals allows my mind to relax about what I want to accomplish.  It allows me to come up with an appropriate plan of action, and figure out the best way to get to where I want to be. I realize that I must break down some goals into smaller steps, because some of my intentions are not always clear

  1. Be a better listener with my friends.  I talk too much.  I need to stop that.
  2. I have a bad habit of rushing things.  I am going to be a little more mindful of my actions, and pay attention to the moment I’m in instead of the ones yet to come.  Why am I rushing?
  3. Go to gym as soon as I get up.  I used to do this, but my Husband asked me to stop because I was disturbing him.  Well, here’s the thing: I haven’t felt right since I stopped working out early.  I am a morning person, and I feel better getting up and getting things done. In order to be the best partner I can, I have to be the best individual I can. Back to first thing in the AM workouts
  4. I am an emotional eater.  I need to ask myself why I am eating before I put something in my mouth.  I won’t be able to lose weight till I come to terms with this
  5. Be more creative- painting, knitting, something other than writing that lets me express my creativity
  6. Take a picture a day
  7. Increase my use of social media- I am going to expand to more platforms.  The first one is Instagram, which I actually started yesterday, but it’s a steep learning curve for me
  8. Read 50 books
  9. Eat more fruits and veggies
  10. 3 days a week of weight training- I always do at least one, but three times would be optimal
  11. Set times of day devoted to blogging
  12. Make daily writing/editing goals
  13. Flexibility
  14. Prepare to be an empty nester
  15. stop letting people’s comments get to me
  16. Practice grey method (this is essentially learning to ignore negative people in a nice manner)

  1. It took me a while to learn Instagram and I’m still learning. Get a few followers who’s wall/feed isn’t all selfies (what’s the value in that?) and just read there. Then slowly start to like or comment. Play around with a picture or two. There’s no rush. I’d love to help you with the little bit I know (I monitor my kids too) so if you want to follow me, I’ll follow you back. Also the private chat option is nice. Good luck!

      1. I’ll follow you. Beware that IG is full of bad photos (porn) so you have to train it not to show you those. Unless you’re into that I guess. 😬 I had to make my account private because I don’t want the stupid accounts. My name is the same as my blog name .

  2. These are great — very SMART (specific, measurable, action-oriented and trackable). You touched on a lot of things I would also like to work on, so it will be great to read how you are doing on this throughout 2019. On #3, can you put all your workout stuff in another room so you can sneak out of the bedroom with minimal disruption to him? That might help. Just a thought. Happy New Year!

I know I’ve heard SMART before related to goals, but thank you for sharing it here because my critique group discussed setting goals last week regarding writing and we agreed they needed to be within our control. This is an excellent way to look at them and I will be sharing it with my group.

      1. That’s good too. Either way, it’s about choosing goals that can be quantified.
        Our conversation was about getting an agent. It makes sense to say in my quest to get an agent, I will query 20 or 50 or whatever number, because that is measurable and specific, rather than saying my goal is to get an agent which is out of your control.

  3. Happy New Year! This is a great list, I have a few similar items on mine. I have been trying to interact with Instagram and I really don’t like it. I am quite active on Facebook and Twitter but Instagram doesn’t engage me. My illustrator started an Instagram account for our book, AlianaReachesForTheMoon, so I’ve been trying to look at it – I can’t post to the account because she set it up – but I’ve decided I have enough social media without it.
    I read 50 books in 2017 and 65 books in 2018 (not including picture books) so I am not sure of my goal for 2019.
    Question regarding #13 – Flexibility. Do you mean physically or with other people?

    1. Oh…body flexibility!! I figure I can read a book a week, but I cut myself some slack if I get a longer book! I love photography, so I think insta could be good, but we’ll see!

  4. Wonderful list and a lot of them are on mine as well! I practice the gray method all the time with my husband but I didn’t know there was a name for it 🙂 I did a 365 picture project a couple of times and it was fun to try and capture something that I see every day in a different way. Keeping us updated as to how you do is a good accountability check. Here’s to a great 2019.

  5. Are you going to share how to prepare to become an empty nester? I noticed that second son is right on first son’s heels so I think that day is about 20 months away. I think it may be ironic to count the months to empty nesting the same way we counted ages and pregnancy length.

    1. I’m going to try to share my experiences as I approach empty nest hood. It’s bittersweet though, and I’m not sure how I’m going to do it yet! Will let you know though!!


  6. Practicing the gray matter is a terrific way to conserve energy that’s better spent on truly important matters! Turning the other cheek, in the face of negativity/nastiness, is hard, but think of it as a gift to yourself. Hopefully, 2019 will be a great year for accomplishments for all of us…good luck!

  7. Nice list. I have not heard of the grey method must look that one up. I am a morning person too, I find I can get so much more done of a morning including exercise.

  8. I really like the balance of this list. I’m late to many things this year due to illness. I’m better really, only I don’t feel fully there yet. For a variety of reasons being ill this time affected my mental health and my sleep pattern – or that may be the other way round.

    I’ve decided to give select a word for this year in an attempt to not flail around as much as in the past. Focus is in the running, but isn’t resonating. I guess I’ll know when I find it. Same thing going on with setting goals, but the make-up of your list is the first that’s made me think “ah yes”. I joined a woman’s networking group and am taking part in a 6 month accountability & support process in a group of 6 which I’m hoping will provide … erm, focus. It may just end up being the word after all.
