Ok- here’s the post 2 months in the making….the one you’ve all been waiting for……My Sunday Evening Routine.  I know- I know- very exciting.  I’ve wanted to write this post for awhile, but something has always gotten in the way, but here, for your Friday enjoyment…..a little peek into the crazy that I call my mind.

On Sunday nights, (now with the aid of my new planner) I plan out my schedule for the week ahead.

  1. I look at what I have going on and schedule in prep and travel time if required.
  2.   I get everyone else’s schedule for the week and schedule in if I need to assist Husband or Daughter, and I confirm things that I am supposed to do with them
  3. I go over my to do list, schedule when things will be done, and go over my goals and see if anything can be tweaked. This road map time is important to me because it allows me to think about what is and isn’t working, and where I can adjust my routine.  I will write notes months in advance, for example- my January Calendar already has a note- “start planning summer vacation”
  4. I go through “action” folder on my desk.  My action folder holds all papers, mail and school related things that I received that week that did not require immediate action.  It also holds things I ripped out of newspaper or magazine, or brochures I picked up alone the way.  I really look at these things and act on them- ie- if I pulled a recipe I put it in my recipe folder, if I got a flyer for a concert I buy tickets, I schedule to buy canned goods if there is a donation drive at school.  I also file things such as medical reimbursement or anything we still get on paper (which is surprisingly high even though we’ve mostly gone paperless)
  5. I send out text/email to everyone I am supposed to meet with that week to confirm (I also reconfirm the morning of meeting, but that’s just me)
  6. I plan meals and grocery list for entire week (I like knowing who will be home for dinner, what time we will eat, and how much prep will be involved.  I also have certain themes- Monday – Vegetarian, Tuesday -Chicken, Wednesday- Fish, Thursday- Beef, Friday- Pork.  The weekends we often eat out, and I will also utilize leftovers/freezer things.)
  7. I plan time with my family and friends.  Yes- I schedule this because it is important to me.  My goal is to have 2 dates with the Husband (1 us alone, 1 with others), 1 daughter outing, 1 family outing and 1 friend outing and something just for me.  This doesn’t always pan out-(this week I am not able to have an outing with daughter- our schedules conflicted) but I try.
  8. I plan exercise time.  The goal is 5 hours a week.  Exercise is important to me.
  9. I figure out what needs to be bought, and if it can be done online or locally.  I make one run to a drug store type store every week.  If my family needs be to get anything, they must tell me by Monday morning because that is only day I will go.  They don’t tell me, they’re on their own.
  10. I also have a little relax time for me on Sundays.  I like a bath, and I do a face mask and a hair mask and I read a magazine.  This recharges me and makes me the happy go lucky person you read on a daily basis……what- you think I should step up my game on the relaxation cause it’s not really working?!?

Some people will think this is stressful, but seriously- it works for me.  Taking an hour on Sunday nights really sets me up for the week ahead.

And on that note- have a great Friday!

  1. I like your rule about your family telling you what they need on Monday and if not, they are on their own. You sound very planned. I returned to the health club yesterday and was there for about an hour or so. That was great. I usually walk also 3 times a week and bike ride around our area. Exercise is important to me.

    1. Exercise is my savior. It gives me time to just be. After I’ve e revised my mind is so much clearer and more focused. I try not to think about anything except the exercise- my spin teacher caught me yesterday cause I was thinking about something other than exercise and she called me out. I needed that! I learned the hard way that I need to be tough with my family about errands. They need to focus too

  2. You wore me out! Wow, the activity! At my age, I take it one day at a time, and love my time alone, writing my novel! I do remember those kind of busy days, working, volunteering, family, grandkids, socializing, weekends to shop, and the meal planning and cooking! The cleaning. Things are quiet now, few demands. The main thing, enjoy your life! Love your writing.

  3. You would get along very well with my husband. He’s the calendar king. I couldn’t put my kids on a schedule, but I did follow the vet’s advice and do it with the dog and guess what? Great dog. I am willing to give this a try for the month of October. I’ll let you know how it goes.

  4. I believe when you live in a city like New York, it is important to have a rooster of plans. In my 20’s living and surviving on my own in New York City, I would have rocked if I had my plans. As it was, I often just fought and enjoyed the wave best as I could as long as my bills were paid. Now that I live in Florida and have a husband, both of us worry about the bills but we both take care of things, so I guess life became a little easier. I find having a list of 2 to 3 things a day focuses me on my priorities and gives me a sense of accomplishment if and when life gets challenging and if I feel I am not doing my best. Structure works well. If I had a weekly list, I might find it more out there for me.

    1. Nyc makes for an odd pattern. I walk everywhere, which means if I’m shopping for essentials, I can on,y buy what I can carry. Some people get carts, but I sort of refuse to because I’m stubborn….and geography us important. I plan out errands based on where they’re located. It takes some forethought

      1. I understand. From living in big cities, I have strange buying habits for many years: buying fresh and a little. My husband’s patterns helped me develop more long term shopping. Tampa is very spread out and you do need a car. How I miss walking in New York! No wonder I weighed only 125 lbs. Love walking there. I wouldn’t have a cart either as I would want my hands free.

  5. My version of that is planning that I will have a cup of tea when I get out of bed each and every day for the week ahead. Sometimes I need tow. Hats off to your skills. I like and need my time as open as I can get it.

  6. Lord love a duck, you are one organized woman. I’m a bit anxious just reading your list. I tend to be more of a “go with the flow” sort of person, but I respect people who can plan their days in a detailed fashion– then make them happen. You go girl!

  7. That’s an awesome way to start a week. I also work the best when I have a plan. I usually make the menu for the entire week because that is where I get stuck. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and kids snacks … it drives me crazy if I don’t have a plan.
But it is a good idea to plan all other activities also for the week. And Saturday for relaxation is a good idea.
    Thanks for sharing.

  8. I am absolutely exhausted just reading this, but I am a man so you have to forgive that. The only time I’ve been that organised is when I first joined the army. Every day was Drill, Drill, PT, Drill, lunch, Trade and Education. Thursday we had a treat. Drill, Drill, Pay, PT, Trade and Education. Sundays we had off, after Church Parade of course! I’m going for a lie down now.

  9. Wow, I’m impressed! I’m not nearly so organized, but it’s just my husband and me… and he’s pretty much on his own 🙂 . I live by my paper calendar (I tried digital ones when we retired, but they didn’t work well for us), but I get a little nervous if there are more than one or two items listed in one week.

  10. I will own up to planning meals, I then pin the list up so any complaints can be dealt with before the meal is served up, (this makes no difference really I cook what I have planned ;)) .
I also write a list of things I want to get done each day, I love to put a line through them when done. Sad isn’t
